KUALA LUMPUR: Federal Narcotics Department director Comm Datuk Mohd Najib Aziz has been appointed deputy Inspector-General of Police effective Thursday.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, acting on the advice of Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi consented to Mohd Najib’s apointment.
Mohd Najib, who is due to retire on Nov 14, will continue to serve as deputy IGP on a one-year contract. He thanked the King, the Prime Minister and IGP Tan Sri Musa Hassan for their faith and confidence in him.
“I am most grateful to Allah and all of them for this appointment and I will do my best to live up to expectations.
“I will work closely with Musa and all the directors and men in the force to ensure we achieve the IGP's vision and mission in combating crimes, especially in curbing snatch thefts and the drug menace,” he said.
Musa, in welcoming Mohd Najib’s appointment, said the experienced officer would definitely be able to help achieve his mission.
“I feel he can assist me in implementing whatever has been planned and together, we will do whatever it takes to regain public confidence and trust in the force,” he added.
Mohd Najib, who holds a bachelor's degree in Social Science, joined the police force in 1969 as an inspector and rose through the ranks, serving in various posts nationwide.
He was formerly the officer-in-charge of anti-vice and gaming (Penang), investigating officer, OCPD Manjung (Perak), assistant CID director (Intelligence), deputy director (III) narcotics department, deputy director (II) narcotics department, Kelantan police chief and director of the narcotics department.
The father of three is married to Datin Fatimah Hamid.
