BACKPACKERS who sit in the nude and drink beer at the beaches the whole day are not quality tourists.

“We see a lot of these people at the beaches in Terengganu.

“Their presence has social and moral effects on young minds,” said Ismail Sabri Yaakob (BN – Bera) when debating Budget 2005 yesterday.

He said it was important for the Tourism Ministry to attract only quality visitors, such as those from the Middle East.

“They stay for long periods and are willing to spend,” he said, adding that they often travelled with their families.

Ismail said the ministry should offer products and services which attracted quality tourists.

When setting up tourism offices in other countries, he said, the ministry should do research to find out the needs of the people.

Datuk Wan Adnan Wan Mamat (BN – Indera Mahkota) said all Saturdays should be made mandatory off days to promote domestic tourism.
