KOTA KINABALU: Police here crippled a major syndicate involved in illegal four-digit betting, running up to about RM1mil a draw, with the arrest of seven people, including the mastermind.

They arrested the seven, including three women, in two separate raids at houses in Taman Beauty and Taman Hilltop here late Wednesday evening.

City police chief Asst Comm Hamdan Mohammad said the suspects, aged between 27 and 50, were being detained for questioning.

He said the first six suspects were arrested at Taman Beauty at 5.30pm and this led them to Taman Hilltop, where they arrested a 43-year-old suspected of being the mastermind.

The syndicate is believed to have operated for some time in Kota Kinabalu and is also believed to have links to syndicates in Labuan and Brunei.
