KUALA LUMPUR: A 64-year-old doctor died and his friend critically injured yesterday after they were assaulted by three parang-wielding men at his cli-nic in Bangsar here.

T. Ariaratnam, from Bangsar Utama, who died on the spot, had several slash wounds on his head.

His friend P. Basudran, 40, has been warded at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

It is learnt that Basudran, an Indian national, is a friend of Ariaratnam’s and is in Malaysia for a holiday.

City deputy CID chief Asst Comm Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said three men stormed into the 24-hour Pusat Perubatan Arinaga in Lorong Maarof and attacked the two about 3.45am yesterday.

“The injured victim escaped from the clinic after the attack and was chased for about 50m by the armed men.

“He was rushed to the hospital by the doctor’s neighbours who went to his aid after hearing his screams,” said ACP Syed Ismail, adding the attackers then fled in a car.

He said they could not ascertain whether it was a robbery-cum-murder as the witness was still being treated at the hospital.

Police, he added, were investigating the case from various angles.

Police found a parang, believed to be one of the weapons used by the attackers, at the scene.

Ariaratnam’s body has been sent to the KL Hospital for a post-mortem.

He leaves behind a wife and three children.

His children are all in Britain.
