WHEN universities come together, the exchange can create opportunities for connection and collaboration.

It is a commitment shared by Universiti Malaya (UM) and the National University of Singapore (NUS), two of South-East Asia’s leading universities.

Upholding their longstanding tradition, the two institutions recently came together for the 55th UM-NUS Inter-University Tunku Chancellor Golf Tournament as they continued to strengthen friendship, academic collaboration and institutional ties.

Held from July 29 to 30 in Singapore, the event brought together university leaders, alumni, staff and guests for a series of engagements, including a friendly golf competition, the main tournament, as well as the UM-NUS Academic Symposium.

Focusing on artificial intelligence, one of the most transformative forces shaping the future, the symposium provided a platform to strengthen academic partnerships and promote knowledge exchange between the two institutions, UM said in a July 30 press release.

UM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman said the tournament represented far more than a sporting event.

“For over five decades, this annual tournament has served as a meaningful platform to strengthen the enduring friendship between UM and NUS.

“Beyond the game itself, it creates valuable opportunities for our leaders, academics, alumni and communities to connect, exchange ideas and explore new avenues of collaboration that will benefit both institutions and the region,” he added.

Also present were UM chancellor Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah and Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who officiated at the prize presentation ceremony.

First introduced in 1968, the Inter-University Tunku Chancellor Golf Tournament remains one of the longest-running traditions between UM and NUS, the press release read.

“Over the decades, it has evolved into a flagship annual engagement that not only celebrates sportsmanship but also reinforces cooperation in education, research, innovation, student mobility and leadership engagement,” it said, adding that the tournament formed part of UM’s year-long 121st anniversary celebrations.
