PURPOSE, values and societal impact are key pillars that Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz believes will carry individuals far in their chosen fields.

Addressing graduates at the Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) graduation ceremony recently, the PETRONAS president and group chief executive officer noted that the world awaiting this graduating class is “an intimidating one”.

“It is a world that is defined by persistent uncertainty and constant disruption. However, I would also contend that it is a world equally endowed with fantastic opportunities for each of you to seize.

“As you pursue success in your respective fields, what will set you apart are the purpose and values that guide you, as well as the positive impact you will bring to the people and communities you serve through your integrity, leadership and courage,” he said during the event, which also saw him being conferred an Honorary Doctor of the University (DUniv).

The honorary degree recognised Tengku Muhammad Taufik’s outstanding contributions to education, sustainable development, energy transition and technological innovation as a purpose-driven global leader, according to a press release from the university.

“Under his stewardship, PETRONAS has navigated the complexities of the global energy transition while upholding principles of good governance and environmental responsibility.

“This honorary award also reflects the university’s commitment to recognising leaders whose values align with Heriot-Watt’s Strategy 2050, which focuses on driving innovation, sustainability and positive global impact,” it added.

At the ceremony, held at a hotel in Putrajaya on Nov 22, HWUM pro-chancellor Datuk (Dr) Nicol Ann David conferred degrees upon 110 graduates from the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the School of Social Sciences, the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society, and the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.

Heriot-Watt University principal and vice-chancellor Prof Richard A. Williams said the varsity takes pride in cultivating graduates who think critically, act responsibly and lead with purpose.

“This graduation is not only a celebration of individual achievement, but also of our collective effort to build a better, more sustainable future through education, innovation and global collaboration,” he said.

HWUM provost and chief executive officer Prof Mushtak Al-Atabi expressed confidence that the graduates would continue to shape a better world for generations to come.

“We aim to empower our students to live with purpose and compassion, equipped with the knowledge and mindset to make meaningful contributions to society,” he said.
