New programmes under review

The Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) is in the process of evaluating and approving new university programmes to keep up with global trends.

MQA chairman Prof Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang said one of the upcoming programmes being considered is Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence (AI).

“We are looking into new programmes all the time. We are now talking about computer science.

“AI is part of computer science so the traditional computer science might be replaced by the new one,” he told a press conference at Management and Science University (MSU), Shah Alam, on Aug 5.

In June, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said all institutions of higher learning had been asked to review and re-evaluate their programmes to align the courses offered with the latest technological developments, particularly in the field of AI.

He said the assessment exercise was important considering there are varsity faculties or departments that were set up more than three decades ago based on market needs at the time.

While not all programmes need to change, industry needs and teaching approaches today are different, Bernama quoted him as saying.
