KUALA LUMPUR: Young people must learn about national leaders, history, and continue the “amanah” (responsibility) of Tun Abdul Razak Hussein’s legacy, says Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir.

He said that the late former prime minister’s legacy should not just be remembered, but continued and carried forward.

“We are not merely gathered to remember a great figure.

“We are here to understand the meaning of a dedication that lives on in policies, institutions and the nation itself.

“A leader like Tun Razak did not think about himself, but about what he could build for future generations,” he said during his speech at the Tun Abdul Razak Legacy Forum on Tuesday (April 21).

He also said that the late former prime minister’s leadership cannot be confined to a single style, as it combined pragmatism with transformative vision during a time when the nation was still defining its identity.

“Following the events of 1969, Barisan Nasional was formed, which brought together all groups, leaders who were consultative and consensus builders.

“It is not easy to bring everyone to the table, to listen, deliberate and decide together, but that was the strength of his leadership,” he said.

Universiti Malaya (UM), through the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) in collaboration with Yayasan Tun Razak, hosted the Tun Abdul Razak Legacy Forum in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the passing of Malaysia’s second prime minister.

The forum served as a platform to reflect on Tun Abdul Razak’s enduring contributions to nation-building, particularly in advancing national unity, rural development, and education.
