A GROUP of Interior Architecture students from UCSI University did their institution proud by sweeping 13 prizes at the 17th MIID Interior Design Competition in Cyberjaya.
The annual competition, organised by the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers, aimed to nurture creativity and motivate healthy competition in interior design through transformational activities.
With the theme “Re-invent”, the national competition saw UCSI students clinching first and second place in Residential Design and Commercial Design; first place in Hospitality Design, Installation Design and Performance; and another six awards in furniture design, photography, sketching and others.
It was notably the biggest haul of awards in the varsity’s School of Architecture and Built Environment history.
The students including final year students Morteza Bozorgi and Edward Gan were ecstatic about their wins as they beat competitors from 14 public and private tertiary institutions.
Inspired by automotive systems, the team created a wooden structure with an internal rotating gear fully made from recycled materials according to the theme “think-inside-the-box”.
Explaining the design concept, Bozorgi said any part removed from the structure will cause the machinery to stop working.
“Matching the theme, our design enables us to ‘think’ inside the box but channel out different thoughts, ideas and elements,” he said, adding that each element represented values like innovation and creativity.
