Pedestrian crossing needed at Ipoh Railway Station

Pedestrians seen running across Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab which has no designated pedestrian crossing.

I refer to the Oct 9 StarMetro article “Ipoh Railway Commuters fume as traffic worsens”.

As an occasional visitor to Ipoh by Electric Train Service, I am familiar with the traffic jam that can build up whenever the train pulls into Ipoh Railway Station.

While the article suggests Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab be turned into a one-way street, I am more concerned that pedestrian access between the station and Ipoh Old Town has been overlooked.

The walk from the station is mostly pleasant – down Jalan Dato Sagor, past the historic Birch Clock Tower, then through Panglima Lane before reaching the crossing to Concubine Lane.

However, there is no designated pedestrian crossing directly in front of the station, despite this being the most direct route for passengers heading towards Ipoh Old Town.

I hope the authorities will consider providing a safe pedestrian crossing in Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab.

Ipoh has the makings of a great walkable city, and improving connections like this would help make it even better to get around on foot.
