THE National Mid-Autumn Festival got off to a spectacular start in Petaling Street as hundreds of visitors flocked to Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur for an evening of cultural performances, dazzling lantern displays and a fireworks finale.
Organised by the Malaysian Chinese Assembly Hall (MCAH), the event marked the beginning of this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, drawing locals and international guests to the iconic tourist attraction.
Guest of honour, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the festival reflected Malaysia’s multicultural identity and the importance of embracing diverse traditions.
“I am delighted to see people from different races and religions celebrating together today.
“We should appreciate our diverse cultures with open hearts and share them with one another,” he said at the launch.
Tiong added that his ministry would soon meet Kuala Lumpur City Hall to discuss proposals to further promote Petaling Street as a premier food tourism destination.
He urged traders and business owners in the area to continue enhancing the street’s appeal as one of Malaysia’s signature attractions for both local and international visitors.
Meanwhile, MCAH president Datuk Seri Dr KK Chai said the festival welcomed representatives from 17 countries, describing it as “a mini United Nations gathering”.
“More than a national celebration, tonight reflects the spirit of Malaysia’s friendship with the world.
“Although we come from different countries, cultures and languages, we are united under one umbrella and one lantern,” he said.
To mark the Mid-Autumn Festival, Tiong and Chai joined a mooncake-making demonstration on stage alongside MCAH honorary advisor Datuk Seri Michael Chong.
