SELANGOR is looking to expand its Higher Education Institution Study Incentive (HPIPT) next year by increasing the number of recipients, following demand from university-bound students.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the RM1,000 incentive had consistently attracted applications exceeding the quota of 3,000 students, in both 2025 and 2026.
“The state is assessing, based on Selangor’s financial position, the possibility of increasing the number of recipients to between 5,000 and 6,000.
“We previously provided assistance to 5,000 recipients and, hopefully, we will be able to restore that number under the 2027 Selangor budget,” he said during the Selangor State Assembly at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam yesterday.
Amirudin said the state was also reviewing the HPIPT application period to ensure students had sufficient time to submit their applications after receiving confirmation of admission to higher education institutions.
He said one of the main concerns raised by applicants was the relatively short application window.
“We are also considering opening HPIPT applications twice a year to provide greater opportunities for students enrolling during different university intake periods.”
He was responding to Datuk Noorazley Yahya (PN-Bukit Melawati) who asked about the current status of the HPIPT scheme, which provides one-off financial aid to Selangor students pursuing studies at recognised public and private higher education institutions.
