A tree estimated to be nearly 50 years old along Jalan Raja Ashman Shah (formerly Ashby Road) will be felled after an inspection found its structural integrity severely compromised by fire damage.
An Ipoh City Council (MBI)spokesperson said the decision was made following a social media video showed parts of the tree trunk burnt and hollowed out.
The short clip went viral after raising safety concerns that the tree could topple onto vehicles parked nearby.
“The city council has taken note of the condition of the tree, which was alleged to be dangerous and poorly maintained.
“We previously received a request from Gurdwara Sahib Greentown to prune the tree as its overgrown branches were close to the visitors’ parking area,” said the spokesperson.
Records from MBI Parks and Landscape Department show pruning works were carried out on July 20 last year, resolving the initial issue.
“During the maintenance works, an inspection found the tree to be in good condition, with no signs of fire damage or serious defects to its trunk that could affect its structural stability.”
However, following the recent video, MBI discovered extensive fire damage inside the trunk, which now has a large hollow cavity.
“We believe the damage was caused by individuals who set fire to the inside of the tree.
“This has affected the tree’s stability and significantly increased the risk of structural failure, particularly during strong winds or adverse weather conditions,” said the city council.
Expressing regret over the incident, the spokesperson said the tree was previously healthy, providing shade and aesthetic value to the area.
“In the interest of public safety, the city council will proceed with felling the tree according to its planned work schedule.”
The spokesperson also said MBI remained committed to regularly inspecting and maintaining roadside trees under its jurisdiction based on public complaints, technical assessments and risk priorities.
“We urge the public to promptly report any acts of vandalism or damage to public trees so that immediate action can be taken.
“The city council appreciates the public’s concern for safety and will continue to take the necessary measures to safeguard the well-being of the community,” the spokesperson added.
