Colourful vessels called lepa cutting proudly through Semporna waters with sambulayang (sails) fluttering in the wind during Lepa Regatta are not just a celebration of local culture; they also showcase Sabah’s maritime tradition to the world.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin noted that this year’s event attracted domestic and international tourists, as it had become one of Sabah’s most renowned events.
He said the three-day festival included a variety of activities such as the decorated lepa competition, boat races, exhibitions, Malam Sangom Maglami-Lami (cultural night), Lepa Run and Ratu Lepa pageant.
“That is why culture is no longer just a symbol of historical legacy.

“In this era of globalisation, it has become a strategic asset capable of generating economic growth, strengthening social unity and enhancing the competitiveness of our tourism destinations,” he told Bernama.
The regatta is a traditional festival of the Bajau Semporna community and the lepa was their primary mode of transportation in the past.
Jafry said, “We want future generations to not only hear stories about Lepa Regatta but also to continue to have the opportunity to witness and appreciate it.”
He said the socioeconomic impact of this maritime festival was evident through the sharp increase in demand for accommodation, food and transport, while also promoting handicraft and small businesses.
To maintain momentum, he urged the involvement of the entire community, especially the younger generation, in preserving indigenous cultures and natural treasures for Sabah to keep its touristic edge.
Semporna district officer Mas Syazwan Masood said the vibrancy of the 31st Lepa Regatta was enhanced by the thousands of colourful flags that lined Semporna’s main routes.

He said it reflected the strong spirit of togetherness and high excitement among locals.
The lepa itself symbolised craftsmanship wisdom, community resilience and an intimate connection with the sea as the main source of livelihood, he said.
“It is imperative that Lepa Regatta be celebrated every year as our continuous effort to sustain a great heritage that has shaped the face and unique identity of the Semporna district we know today,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ratu Lepa 2025 winner Azirah Ramlee said although she had handed her crown to her successor, efforts to uphold heritage continued.
She explained that over the past year, she translated this responsibility into active involvement in various prestigious cultural platforms, including representing Sabah at the Asean Programme and Sabah Art Star Competition organised by National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) Sabah, as well as the Borneo Star Talent event in Sarawak.
Her advice to the new winner is: “No matter who held or holds the title, our goal remains the same, which is to be the generation that continues to guard, appreciate and uphold our people’s heritage.”
