A BAKERY van driver was disappointed with poor workmanship on a Chinese altar cabinet he had ordered from a carpentry company in Taman Selesa Jaya, Johor Baru.
Wong Chee Liong said he had also ordered a television cabinet from the company.
“I paid RM9,388 for the two items for my new apartment in Taman Pulai Mutiara 2, Skudai, Johor Baru,” he said outside the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal at Menara Ansar, Johor Baru.
Wong, 49, who works in Singapore, said he made payments in three instalments – RM1,700 on Aug 18, followed by RM1,688 on Sept 9, and RM6,000 on Sept 24 last year.
He had asked for the two items to be ready by early February this year as he wanted to move into his new place before Chinese New Year.
“But the company failed to keep its promises, claiming the delays were due to its workers going on Hari Raya Aidilfitri leave,” said Wong.
Although the company delivered the altar cabinet albeit after missing the deadline, he was dissatisfied with the finished product and poor workmanship.
Wong said formica was used instead of white glossy board as agreed, and attributed the surface defects and loose drawers to the use of low-quality materials.
“Nails were protruding from the top of the altar cabinet, posing risks.”
Despite getting full payment, Wong said the company also failed to deliver the television cabinet he had ordered.
Wong said he was promised that RM9,388 would be returned to him on March 14 but the company owner failed to do so.
Tribunal president Lee Chee Thim ordered the respondent to refund RM9,388 to the claimant within two weeks.
