Smarter CCTVs for Greater JB

Johor government plans to have 5,000 smart closed-circuit TV (CCTV) cameras across Greater Johor Baru by next year.

State housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said this included about 2,500 cameras in the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) area alone.

“When we introduced smart CCTVs in 2023 and 2024, they essentially functioned only as cameras.

“But moving forward, we are focusing on having CCTVs that can record movement, which can be very helpful in hit-and-run incidents and for security matters.

“All the information is linked to the respective command centres of the local councils, which will then be integrated with the police, Fire and Rescue Department, ambulance services and other relevant agencies,” he said after launching the Johor Smart City Forum at Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre in Pasir Gudang, Johor.

He added that the command centres of the four local councils under Greater Johor Baru, namely MBJB, Iskandar Puteri City Council, Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG) and Kulai Municipal Council, would also be linked in a single system.

“Say we want to track a vehicle. Currently, if we have traced the vehicle in the MBJB area and it then enters Pasir Gudang, we would have to ask MBPG to look for it again.

“Moving forward, I will ask that the command centres of the four local councils be linked.”

He said Johor had come a long way in developing its Smart City capabilities and was now ensuring that the public was aware of and could benefit from the improvements.

Mohd Jafni said smart traffic lights were among technologies being enhanced to provide more tangible benefits to road users, with the system able to measure traffic volume and adjust traffic light timings accordingly.

“That is what we mean when we say that ultimately, it must benefit the people.”

He added that Johor was the only state where all local councils had reached at least Level 1 Smart City status, and MBJB was the only local council at Level 3.
