A first-of-its-kind artificial intelligence-powered e-waste recycling bin has been introduced at a mall in Johor Baru to boost local environmental sustainability.

Launched in conjunction with World Earth Day, the bin is the centrepiece of the Intelligent E-Waste Recognition and Recycling Programme, organised by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Johor Baru in collaboration with Sutera Mall.

JCI Johor Baru president Qistine Toong Chui Yi said the bin could recognise and classify e-waste automatically.

“The bin helps users dispose of items more efficiently while reducing pollution caused by improper disposal methods.

“We hope this can pave the way for more technology-driven environmental programmes in Johor,” she said.

The bin, located at the ground floor, will be a permanent fixture in the mall.

“This programme is not just about introducing new technology, but also about creating greater environmental awareness,” said Toong.

“We hope this initiative will encourage more people to practise proper e-waste disposal and understand the importance of protecting the environment through simple daily actions,” she added.

Toong said the organisers hoped to expand the initiative to other malls and organisations too.

Among the highlights of the launch was an “exchange e-waste for fresh vegetables” campaign, where visitors brought old mobile phones, chargers and small electronic devices for fresh produce.

The event also featured a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony between JCI Johor Baru and the mall, witnessed by Johor Environment Department senior assistant director Mazrita Masnon. — By UMESH RAVIKUMAR
