Pop meets classic on May 16 as ‘rock star’ reloads with MPO

GRAMMY-winning violinist Charles Yang returns to Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) on May 16 to perform a classical-crossover concert with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO).

The “Charles Yang Reloaded” concert will be led by MPO resident conductor Gerard Salonga, showcasing classical techniques with pop, blues and rock.

A recipient of the 2018 Leonard Bernstein Award, Yang was described as a musician who “plays classical violin with the charisma of a rock star” by The Boston Globe.

He has performed at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in Germany as well as the Ravinia Festival in the US, and collaborated with luminaries such as Joshua Bell, Steve Miller and Jon Batiste.

He is also a member of eclectic string trio Time For Three, which won a Grammy for its recording titled Letters for the Future.

Yang and frequent collaborator pianist Peter Dugan will perform a medley that includes Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Oblivion, Hotel California, Blackbird and the hugely popular Thriller and Billie Jean.

The songs are arranged either slightly different from the original or sound completely new.

Yang will also lend his vocals on songs like Fly Me To The Moon, House of the Rising Sun, A Change Is Gonna Come and original composition Streets of Berlin.

Tickets for the evening concert at DFP KLCC are priced from RM249 to RM499.
