MACHAP Jaya is emerging as a new recreational and cultural tourism destination in Melaka through local community’s traditions, scenic views and local foods.

Machap Jaya assemblyman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said various activities and tourism products were being undertaken to attract domestic and foreign tourists, thus helping boost the community’s economy.

“We will adopt tourism products in this area, in phases, to be made into new attractions.

“This includes Hutan Percha which has various food products, batik industries and recreational activities such as hill climbing,” he said in Kuala Sungga, Alor Gajah, Bernama reported.

He said this at the week-long Ngoca Programme launched in conjunction with a community initiative by the Machap Jaya state constituency.

Also present was Melaka science, technology, innovation and digital communications committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan and youth, sports and non-governmental organisations committee chairman Datuk VP Shanmugam.

Ngwe, who is also the state health, human resources and unity committee chairman, said a total of 98 activities were planned throughout the week involving the entire community, including Orang Asli from seven nearby villages.

On the issues faced by the residents, he said the state would work to resolve infrastructure complaints including damaged roads, faulty street lamps and drainage problems.

“Machap Jaya is a rural area and we are also focusing on basic needs including the provision of community facilities such as a community hall and space for residents’ activities.

“We will do our best to address complaints and problems.”

On the “ngoca” tradition – a mass fishing activity using hands held in Kampung Kuala Sungga – Ngwe said it was an annual event, now in its third year.

He said the activity not only preserved the local community’s cultural heritage but was also able to strengthen relationships among residents.

More than 500 participants attended the event which included several traditional sports.
