High-lumen LED streetlights with five-year warranties are the standard for all new installations in Selangor to ensure better visibility and durability.
State infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said the suppliers were required to meet the specifications set out in tender agreements.
He was responding to a supplementary question from Azmizam Zaman Huri (PH-Pelabuhan Klang), who claimed that recently installed lights in his constituency appeared dimmer than earlier models.
Izham explained that the new systems, particularly integrated solar LED lights, were high-end and adjustable.
“For instance, in residential areas, the lights can be set to full brightness from 7pm to midnight and dimmed by 50% thereafter following complaints that they were excessively bright.
“As such, the claim must be investigated,” he said during the Selangor state assembly sitting in Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam yesterday.
He was initially replying to Datuk Harrison Hassan (PN-Jeram) on long-term maintenance for street lighting in urban and rural areas.
Izham said the state, through the Public Works Department (JKR) and local authorities, was committed to systematic and continuous maintenance.
For state roads under JKR supervision, maintenance is funded via Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris) allocations.
“Among the implementation plans is the Long-Term Contract for the Maintenance of State Roads (2026-2030).
“The scope includes fault inspections, component replacements and responding to complaints,” he said.
He added that procurement via quotations and balloting allowed local contractors to participate, ensuring faster implementation.
To a further supplementary question from Harrison on the prioritisation of integrated solar LED systems, Izham said the rollout was being carried out in phases.
He added that the state was expediting the replacement of existing sodium lights, which were frequently targeted by cable thieves.
The sitting has been adjourned sine die.
