LAND acquisition for the RM512mil Sungai Langat flood mitigation project in Hulu Langat is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of this year, and is expected to take about 12 months to complete.
Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said Phase 2 Package 1 of the project was undergoing detailed engineering design, a process expected to take between six and nine months.
“It will be completed in the fourth quarter of this year, following which the land acquisition process will take place,” he told the Selangor State Assembly at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor, Shah Alam, yesterday.
“Once the detailed design is completed, we will know how much land needs to be acquired.”
He was responding to David Cheong Kian Young (PH-Kajang), who asked about the project’s current implementation status, its overall impact on Kajang and downstream Hulu Langat, and the timeline for subsequent phases of the Sungai Langat Flood Mitigation Plan.
Izham said physical construction works were slated to begin following conclusion of the design and land acquisition phases, set for the end of next year, with the physical work expected to span 67 months.
The Federal Government, he said, had approved a total allocation of RM512mil for Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department to execute the project.
Preliminary estimates place the cost of land acquisition at roughly RM166mil, though Izham noted that the final expenditure would only be confirmed after the detailed design stage concluded.
“Once operational, the mitigation works are designed to provide flood protection up to a 100-year average recurrence interval.”
He said the goal was to significantly reduce flood risks, improve regional drainage efficiency, protect local residents and assets, and strengthen infrastructure resilience across Kajang and downstream portions of Hulu Langat district.
However, he emphasised that Package 1 alone would not completely resolve flood management challenges for the entire Sungai Langat basin.
“We will look at the need to request additional funds for downstream areas after Package 1,” he said.
He added that Package 2, which covers Sepang, was being implemented, while Package 3 in Kuala Langat had yet to receive federal funding.
Izham said Selangor planned to submit a formal application to secure the necessary allocations to complete flood mitigation works across the entire basin.
He also clarified that there was no separate Phase 3 project, noting that the initiative consisted solely of Phase 2, divided across Package 1, Package 2 and Package 3.
