A SELANGOR assemblyman is calling for reforms to public works procedures, citing growing frustration over infrastructure project delays in the state.
Azmizam Zaman Huri (PH-Pelabuhan Klang) said maintenance and upgrading works were often hampered by bureaucratic processes.
"In some cases, the budgets for projects have yet to be approved, causing delays in implementation.
"Other times, funding is available but approvals from the relevant authorities are still pending," he said.
Azmizam pointed to overlapping jurisdictions in drain management as a key challenge, noting that responsibilities were split among local councils, the Public Works Department (JKR), Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), as well as land and district offices.
He raised the issue during the winding-up speech by Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim at the state assembly sitting on Tuesday (April 28).
Azmizam proposed that repair works be scheduled during the dry weather season to minimise delays and defects.
He added that the current process allowed little control over project timelines, which in turn, could affect the quality of works.
In response, Izham said he had instructed relevant state agencies, including local councils, JKR and DID, to improve planning and project scheduling, particularly ahead of the rainy season.
