Work From Handphone: Fahmi says public communication will remain seamless during WFH transition

PUTRAJAYA: Public sector productivity and government communications will not be compromised during the upcoming Work From Home (WFH) period, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Addressing concerns regarding the potential impact on public service efficiency, the Communications Minister said the shift towards remote working is a strategic move to optimise fuel consumption and promote energy efficiency.

He said modern technology allows officials to function effectively from any location and physical presence in an office is no longer a prerequisite for delivering results.

"Today, we know that to communicate with the general public, we can ‘WFH’ - work from handphone.

"Therefore, I believe that during this period, our colleagues can still function regardless of where they are located,” he said during a media briefing here on Wednesday (April 8).

He said sectors such as education, security and healthcare, along with any other roles deemed critical by the Chief Secretary to the Government and the Director-General of Public Service, will be exempt from the remote working arrangement, he added.

For the communications sector specifically, Fahmi said the implementation would be left to the discretion of respective heads of department, provided that core operations remain intact.

"We are leaving it to the heads of department to review the requirements, as long as the basic functions are not affected," he said.

Fahmi expressed confidence that the digital tools available to civil servants would ensure a seamless continuation of public service delivery.
