State sees rise in domestic violence cases among women

Domestic violence among women in Selangor has shown an upward trend since 2023, despite cases involving men reducing over the last three years.

State women empowerment and welfare committee chairman Anfaal Saari (pic) said based on the Social Welfare Department (JKM) statistics, a total of 503 domestic violence complaints were received from 2023 to 2025.

“In 2023, 139 domestic violence cases among women were recorded, 149 cases in 2024 and 157 cases in 2025,” she said.

“For men, a total of 21 cases were reported in 2023, 19 in 2024 and 18 in 2025.”

She was responding to Pua Pei Ling (PH-Bukit Lanjan) regarding domestic violence case statistics for the past three years.

Anfaal said there was no data on the total number of unreported domestic violence cases.

“However, the state government is continuously intensifying advocacy and awareness efforts, particularly to encourage victims to come forward to report incidents and seek appropriate assistance,” she said.

Anfaal added that the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Campaign was implemented since 2021 through Wanita Berdaya Selangor.

“The campaign is universal in nature – it does not focus solely on women but emphasises that men and children can also be victims of violence.

“In 2026, the Stop Gender-Based Violence Campaign will be conducted more comprehensively through five Advocacy Series from June to November.

“This advocacy series will also involve agencies responsible for providing support services to victims of violence, such as JKM, Selangor Health Department and the police,” Anfaal said.
