More ‘eyes’ in JB hotspots

Mohd Haffiz: Safe city requires cooperation from community, business owners and the public.

Security measures at several hotspots in Johor Baru are being ramped up to ensure the city remains safe and liveable amid rapid urban growth.

Mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said the city’s rapid development and growing economic activity has made security challenges more complex.

“As such, Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) remains committed to keeping the city safe, conducive and liveable for everyone,” he said during the city council’s full board meeting.

Mohd Haffiz added that several areas within MBJB’s jurisdiction have been identified as security hotspots based on analysis and public complaints.

He said these included the KSL Shopping Mall and Holiday Villa area, Taman Tampoi Indah and Johor Baru City Square.

“These locations are major public attractions and commercial hubs that need closer monitoring.

“To address this, MBJB is enhancing its closed-circuit TV (CCTV) coverage in these areas.

“The installations are not just for real-time monitoring but also to prevent crime, assist investigations and boost public confidence,” he added.

Mohd Haffiz said within the KSL Shopping Mall and Holiday Villa area, 58 new CCTV units would be installed on top of the existing 26 units.

Taman Tampoi Indah will see 22 new cameras added to the current five, while Johor Baru City Square will receive 58 additional units alongside the 124 existing cameras.

“All CCTV systems will be integrated with Johor Baru Integrated Operations Control Centre (JBIOCC) for effective monitoring and faster incident response.

“This initiative aligns with our smart city vision, leveraging technology to enhance safety and urban well-being,” he said.

However, Mohd Haffiz added that creating a safe city was not solely the responsibility of authorities.

“It requires cooperation from the community, business owners and the public.

“With joint efforts, we can create a safer, more harmonious and prosperous city,” he said.

He added that residents should support the initiatives by reporting suspicious activity and following regulations set by authorities.

Mohd Haffiz also thanked enforcement and security agencies for their cooperation with MBJB and hoped the initiatives would positively impact public safety and well-being.
