EIGHT traders affected by a fire at Pasar Sentral in Labuan last month have received disaster relief assistance from the Federal Government totalling RM10,000.

The assistance was presented by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh, who visited the market with several officials to assess the damage for themselves.

The blaze, which broke out at around midnight on March 13, destroyed eight vegetable trading tables at the wet market located within the island’s Urban Transformation Centre.

Yeoh said the contribution reflected the Government’s concern for the welfare of small traders and hoped the assistance would help offset their losses.

“The government and local authorities will continue to support traders who are affected by unforeseen incidents such as this,” she said, as reported by Bernama.

Labuan Corporation, which manages Pasar Sentral, will also be carrying out repair and maintenance works to restore the facility.

Yeoh was accompanied by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Lo Su Fui and officials from Labuan Corporation.

Earlier, Labuan Corporation had announced a 50% discount on monthly rental for 517 traders operating at Pasar Sentral’s wet and dry markets.

The rental reduction, from Jan 1 to Dec 31 this year, is for stalls with monthly rent ranging from RM35 to RM3,500 and is aimed at easing their financial worries while stimulating business activity.
