UNDERPRIVILEGED students and single-parent families received a boost when Khor Teng Tong and Hunza Charity Bhd (KTTHCB) disbursed RM504,000 during the July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025 financial year, benefitting 1,385 people.

KTTHCB director Datuk Seri Khor Teng Tong said the organisation aimed to assist 2,000 people annually, after reaching about 1,800 beneficiaries in the previous financial year.

“I grew up poor, so I want to help others in need,” he said.

Speaking at a press conference at Hunza Tower in George Town, Khor said 55% of the funds went to students, followed by 28% to single-parent families.

Another 166 beneficiaries were from low-income groups and patients.

He said aid was given based on need, with students receiving RM300 each, single parents RM1,500 and the elderly and healthcare patients got RM500.

“We hope more people in need will come forward and apply for assistance,” said Khor.

Project manager Ooi Chuan Aik said the organisation identified B40 students and single parents through lists from schools while other underprivileged groups were through the Welfare Department.

Medical patients were usually referred by third parties, he added.

Applicants must submit supporting documents, including proof of income, and where relevant, divorce or death certificates.

The organisation said its programmes aimed to ease financial burdens and support low-income groups’ access to education.

Established in 2019, it provides aid to students, families and vulnerable groups in Penang and Kerian in Perak.
