Singapore medical group founder picks home state as launch pad for expansion to Malaysia
A SINGAPORE-based private healthcare provider has picked Penang as the launch pad for its first specialist centre outside the republic.
Alfa Medicus, which operates four centres in Singapore, marked its Malaysian debut with the opening of Aptus Surgery and Specialists Centre in Jalan Burma, George Town.
The move is seen as a milestone for the state’s healthcare landscape, further reinforcing its reputation as a premier regional hub.
Alfa Medicus founder, executive chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) Prof Dr Lim Beng Hai said the opening was more than just a corporate expansion, it was a homecoming.
As a former student of Penang Free School, the renowned surgeon said he had a deep desire to contribute to his home state, noting that he believes in giving back to the community that shaped his early years.
“I have always wanted to open a centre here. The group’s foray into Malaysia is merely the beginning of its commitment to the northern region.
“We hope to open another such centre in the near future when the need arises,” he told reporters after touring the facility with Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Also present were Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, state Health Department director Dr Fazilah Shaik Allaudin, Penang Centre of Medical Tourism (PMED) director Dr Mary Ann Harris, InvestPenang CEO Datuk Loo Lee Lian, Belleview Group CEO Datuk Seri Sonny Ho and Aptus Surgery Centre Sdn Bhd CEO Dr Matthew Mohan.
Chow, in his opening speech, said, “Penang has grown into a state with strong healthcare foundations supported by committed professionals and sustained investment that have helped expand capacity and raise standards.

“Modern healthcare must now evolve beyond mere treatment, to consider the nuances of access, convenience and the overall experience of patients and their families.”
Chow said that what stood out about this centre was its integrated approach, bringing together specialist consultations, day surgery services, diagnostic imaging and health screening in one location.
“This reduces the need for patients to move between multiple facilities, shortens waiting time and supports a smoother journey to recovery.
“Same-day procedures will also help patients return to their routines sooner while allowing families to plan better.”
He also pointed to the robust performance of Penang’s medical tourism ecosystem.
“In 2025, hospitals under this umbrella recorded more than 449,000 foreign patients, a 7.3% increase from 2024.
“Revenue reached approximately RM985mil, representing a 9.8% year-on-year growth.
“These figures demonstrate continued confidence in Penang as a healthcare destination.
“Developments like this also strengthen that position by expanding capacity, improving patient experience and reinforcing trust among patients, insurers and corporate partners.”
According to Prof Lim, the RM100mil facility spans over 3,530sq m across five floors, housing specialist consultations, operating theatre support, anaesthesiology and pharmacy services.
Its in-house disciplines include general surgery, otolaryngology (ENT), orthopaedics, ophthalmology and aesthetic medicine.
