KLANG Royal City Council (MBDK) plans to expand the two-hour parking system in busy commercial areas to improve parking turnover, reduce congestion and deter all-day parking.

MBDK Corporate Communications Department director Norfiza Mahfiz said the city council had expanded the two-hour parking zone to four new areas this month, and was considering further expansion to other locations.

The two-hour system, or hot zone parking, was introduced in Jalan Tiara 2, Bandar Baru Klang, in 2023, with 25 bays marked out in orange paint.

It aims to free up parking bays on high-traffic streets and make space for visitors running quick errands.

“Effective March 9, MBDK expanded the two-hour parking zone to two streets each in Bandar Bukit Tinggi and south Klang, covering 94 bays in total,” said Norfiza.

The locations are: Jalan Batu Nilam 1 (29 bays) and Lorong Batu Nilam 4B (44 bays) in Bandar Bukit Tinggi, as well as Jalan Stesen (10 bays) and Jalan Raya Timur (11 bays) in south Klang.

“The expansion of the two-hour parking system will depend on feedback from motorists,” said Norfiza.

“Public feedback is important to identify high-demand commercial areas, to discourage motorists from hogging parking bays for hours.”

According to her, adding new locations to the system requires MBDK to specify the number of bays and submit street names to the State Economic Planning Unit.

The city council must also consult the State Legal Adviser’s Chamber to facilitate the gazettement process.

“New streets that are approved for the system will be gazetted under the Road Transport Order (Provision of Parking Space) MBDK (Amendment) 2025,” said Norfiza.

She said MBDK’s Enforcement Department issued 2,612 compounds between 2023 and 2025 to motorists for exceeding the two-hour parking limit at the designated bays in Bandar Baru Klang.

“The compounds over the three-year period totalled close to RM158,000,” she disclosed.

Several motorists told StarMetro that the hot zone parking concept was a step in the right direction, but required stricter enforcement to prevent misuse and ensure fair access to limited parking spaces.
