Chinese community associations in Sibu, Sarawak, have been urged to become strategic partners in driving the nation’s tourism and economic agenda for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing said these organisations possessed the networks and influence to showcase the unique heritage of Sarawak, particularly Sibu, to visitors.
“The success of VM2026 requires comprehensive involvement of all parties including associations, traders, service providers and residents.
“Community support is crucial to ensure tourism promotions and development initiatives can be implemented effectively and sustainably,” he said at a United Chinese Association (UCA) Sibu Chinese New Year gathering.
Tiong said Sibu’s Chinese community was uniquely positioned to act as a bridge for visitors.
He encouraged these associations to embrace a more creative, forward-looking approach by pooling resources and expertise to expand the reach and impact of their programmes.
“In an era of rapid information technology, we must leverage our networks to promote Sibu effectively.”
Tiong emphasised that unity remained the cornerstone of Sarawak’s stability.
“Unity is our strength. Differences of opinion must not be allowed to undermine the harmony that has long been established,” he said.
He also reminded those interacting with tourists to consistently demonstrate professionalism, sincerity and spirit of cooperation.
At the event, Tiong announced a RM100,000 allocation to UCA Sibu to implement programmes and initiatives in conjunction with VM2026.
Present were Sarawak Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister Datuk Michael Tiang, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, Lanang MP Alice Lau, Sarawak United People’s Party Youth chief councillor Kevin Lau and UCA Sibu president Ngieng Hock Teck.
