FINDING a parking spot in Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park might get a little easier soon.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has stepped up enforcement against individuals who hog public parking spaces.
“DBKL wishes to emphasise that all the parking lots it manages belong to the public and any attempts to monopolise them are not allowed,” it said in a statement.
The move comes after frequent complaints about parking shortage in the busy industrial-commercial hub.
DBKL emphasised that it was continuously monitoring the area to ensure a reasonable parking turnover rate.
It acknowledged that the shortage was largely driven by individuals who set up their stalls, place traffic cones or barriers without permission on the parking bays in the commercial park.
DBKL warned that all the parking lots it managed were public property and any attempt to claim them exclusively was illegal.
“Commuters going to the nearby Kuchai MRT station also tend to park their vehicles in the area for long hours,” it added.
To address the unique needs of those living in the area, DBKL has been trialling a special Residents’ Pass since last June.
This pass, priced at a discounted rate of RM70, is intended for those living along Jalan Kuchai Maju 13, 14, 16, and 17.
However, the parking issue continued to be contentious and StarMetro highlighted this in a Feb 10 article, “Residents cry foul as Kuchai parking trial fails to deliver”.
According to DBKL, as of January, 93 residents had signed up for the initiative at the area which had nearly 600 residential units.
While some residents in other neighborhoods had asked for similar discounts, DBKL clarified that it would evaluate such expansions in phases based on the actual needs of each area.
The authority continued to monitor the situation to ensure the parking management remained orderly and provided fair access to the public.
In a related development, DBKL also moved to resolve parking frustrations in Taman City.
Following reports of residents being fined for parking in residential lots marked with yellow lines, DBKL repainted six lots along Jalan Selingsing white.
As of Jan 19, these spots were officially free of charge that provided much-needed relief to the local community.
