A NEW modern market is needed in Taman Universiti Indah, Seri Kembangan in Selangor, to serve its growing population, said Wong Siew Ki.

The Seri Kembangan assemblyman said the neighbourhood currently lacked a dedicated marketplace despite being home to over 10,000 residents.

“Instead, hawkers operate temporary pop-up stalls in the morning that are gone by noon.

“Furthermore, the number of hawkers has dwindled to just about 20 now.

“There were more previously, but over the years many have left because they do not have a structured business area with proper facilities such as electricity, water and toilets,” said Wong.

“If residents want to go to a proper market, they need to travel along a busy main road to Bazar Rakyat in Taman Bukit Serdang, which is about 2.7km from Taman Universiti.

“It is also not safe to cycle there from here,” she added.

Speaking after a site visit to view completed upgrades outside SK Taman Universiti, Wong expressed hope for support from Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and the Federal Government to build the facility.

She envisions a modern complex that operates as a market during the day and transforms into a community activity centre in the evening.

“The market could also serve as a tourist attraction, with locals selling their produce,” she said.

Regarding infrastructure improvements for pupils, MBSJ councillor Suzanah Hanim Wong said upgrading works outside the primary school were completed successfully within 12 weeks.

The RM204,254 project, funded by MBSJ, involved upgrading of drains and rain covers, and constructing sheltered walkways.

“We first received complaints of flooding outside the school on the lower ground in 2024.

“Initially, we thought it was due to clogged drains.

“However, it turns out the narrow drainage could not contain rainwater, resulting in overflow and flooding during heavy rain.

“The upgrade works were completed in September,” she said.

Additionally, Suzanah used her councillor’s allocation for three other community projects.

The first involved upgrading the Mayday community garden in Taman Indah, which included site improvements and new signage.

The second project saw the construction of toilets at the garden while the third project involved creating an educational space in Taman Universiti for community activities involving residents of all ages.
