THE second phase of a mangrove rehabilitation initiative saw the planting of 1,000 saplings and establishment of a specialised nursery in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan.

The programme at the Jimah Power Plant was spearheaded by Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd in partnership with Malaysian Nature Society and the Negri Sembilan Environment Department.

The mangrove nursery features Sonneratia and Avicennia species, which serve as a vital first line of coastal defence and support the surrounding ecosystem.

The activity brings the total to 2,000 mangrove saplings planted along the facility’s coastal area, with the volunteer force comprising Edra employees, Port Dickson fishermen and members of the community.

Jimah Power Plant acting power station manager Muhammad Mazli Ismail Jamail said the initiative was a continuation of Edra’s mangrove rehabilitation efforts.

He said the project strengthened community participation in environmental preservation while aligning with the company’s broader environmental, social and governance goals.

“This initiative highlights how collaboration can drive meaningful action in protecting our environment.

“By planting these mangrove trees and establishing a dedicated nursery, we are laying the foundation for a sustainable ecosystem that nurtures biodiversity, creates thriving habitats for wildlife and ensures a continuous supply of seedlings for future restoration efforts within Edra and the wider community,” he said in a media statement.

“Over time, these efforts will help curb coastline erosion and bring socio-economic benefits to the local community through eco-tourism and the revitalisation of marine resources.”

The project, Mazli said, aligned with Malaysia’s “100 Million Tree Planting” campaign and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

He added that Edra would continue to lead environmental initiatives while integrating sustainability into its operations and corporate culture.
