S’gor to expedite relocation of pig farms to Bukit Tagar this year

SELANGOR aims to relocate pig farms to Bukit Tagar under its centralisation plan this year, ahead of the initial 2030 target.

State infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said efforts were being intensified to settle land matters at the proposed site.

“I have discussed with Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, and we will fast-track the necessary process.

“However, the state government will not disburse any funds and will only act as the facilitator,” he said when met during a press conference at the state secretariat building in Shah Alam on Monday (Jan 12).

Izham had earlier been granted an audience with the Selangor Ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, to brief him on the state authorities' steps to prevent pollution in areas around pig farms.

The exco said that although Sultan Sharafuddin acknowledged that such farms were necessary to ensure food security for non-Muslim communities, they must not pose cleanliness and environmental problems.

Earlier this month, the state government reportedly allowed pig farming operations to be temporarily carried out in Tanjong Sepat, Kuala Langat, effective this year.

Sultan Sharafuddin had expressed concerns that the move could worsen pollution in Kuala Langat.

Amirudin said the state government would tighten operational requirements for these farms to improve waste management and minimise drainage impacts.

Izham said, “Farming activities must be carried out within closed spaces.

"Operators must also ensure sufficient buffer zones and zero discharge to surrounding drains and rivers.”

According to the initial plan, the farms would be relocated to a 202ha site, Bukit Tagar, in 2030 as part of an effort to centralise pig farming in Selangor.

There are approximately 110 pig farms in the state.
