Peranakan pride, poolside pleasures

As the year-end celebrations fade into memory, the quest for moments of tranquil relaxation begins.

Nestled in a corner of the Level 7 rooftop terrace of M Social Resort Penang, Breezy Bites offers a quiet escape where sun, sea, sips and social energy converge.

The poolside bar occupies a spot one floor below the lobby, a quirk of the hotel’s split-block architecture, offering a laid-back setting to watch the day transition to sunset.

From the edge of the terrace, guests are treated to panoramic views of the Tanjung Bungah coastline and Andaman Sea.

Those seeking respite from the heat on warmer days can retreat to an air-conditioned indoor space with comfy plush seating, a pool table and giant murals celebrating Penang’s art scene.

The design here reflects the hotel’s aesthetic, blending a modern industrial look with Peranakan elements such as geometric tiles, terrazzo bar tops and floral accents.

These fresh and fun homages to local culture give the place an informal and unpretentious atmosphere, perfect for catching up over a drink or two, including the special Pink Peranakan.

Created for Millennium Hotels and Resorts’ 30th anniversary, the cocktail remains available until March 31.

Mixologist Yakneesh Sivasamy said the drink blends vodka with lychee liqueur, torch ginger syrup and pink guava juice.

The result is a delicately layered sip, lightly floral and fruit-forward, giving way to subtle tartness alongside an aromatic lift from the spice and richness from egg white foam.

The other seasonal speciality is Pisang Noir – a riff on the classic Rum Old Fashioned – using spiced rum and sweet bananas for a smoky nuance.

On the regular menu are a dozen classics, including the Whiskey Sour with the obligatory bourbon, lemon juice, syrup and egg white.

Well-balanced and comforting, it opens with warm caramel and vanilla notes.

The acidity keeps everything in check, while the cloud-like foam adds velvety smoothness.

Yakneesh makes his Pina Colada with fresh coconut rather than syrup, giving it a more natural fragrance and creamier mouthfeel. Served in an actual coconut, it is the perfect antidote for balmy weather.

Also available are Mojito, Moscow Mule, Negroni, Margarita, Tom Collins, Old Fashioned, Espresso Martini, Mai Tai and Long Island Iced Tea.

“We can also make bespoke cocktails.

“Just let us know what spirit bases or flavour profiles you’re after,” said Yakneesh.

For alcohol-free alternatives, there are mocktails, coffee and juices.

The kitchen serves up a range of options to go with the drinks, including Tuna and Egg Croquettes, Braised Lamb Meatballs, Crispy Squid as well as Flower Crab and Shrimp Ceviche.

Beef Sliders and Char-Grilled Peruvian Chicken Skewers are among its heartier alternatives while familiar favourites here include Hawaiian or Margherita pizzas.

The bar currently runs several promotions, including a “Beer Me, Baby!” deal from 11am to 8pm daily with discounts on bottled and draught beers.

“Breezy Hours”, which runs during the same time daily, offers three snacks (French fries, pizza and chicken wings) alongside two fresh coconuts for RM100nett.

Perhaps the most inviting perk is the pool access.

The hotel is one of the few to offer free pool access for bar guests who spend a minimum of RM50 per person on food or drinks.

Those visiting during their birthday month will also receive a complimentary snack.
