Selangor govt plans to centralise pig farms in Bukit Tagar within three years

THE Selangor government has plans to centralise pig farms in the state at Bukit Tagar in Hulu Selangor, within the next three years.

State infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said the site, estimated to cover 202ha, may be located on private land gazetted for pig farming.

He was speaking at a press conference at his office in Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam on Thursday.

“This is our long-term plan, and we are finalising land matters to enable this to happen.

"We have Malaysian businessmen who operate modern pig farms in other countries and are keen to embark on this project.

“The discussion on establishing a modern pig farm has been ongoing in the state since as early as 2007.

"However, although we came close to finalising the plan, it was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and later the African Swine Flu (ASF) outbreak in January 2025,” he said. Izham said that since June 2025, licences for pig farms in the state have lapsed.

However, all existing farmers have been invited to apply for new licences.

He said there are currently 111 existing pig farms, along with one illegal farm that will be legalised, all of which will continue operating in Tanjung Sepat.

However, three farms operating in Sungai Belangkan, near the Negri Sembilan border, will need to relocate to Tanjung Sepat while the state finalises the site in Bukit Tagar, which is also home to a landfill.

He added that at the peak of pig farming in the state, there were about 250,000 pigs.

Due to ASF, the number has since dropped to about 100,000.
