NEW Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has committed her administration to making the capital more liveable by revitalising basic services and putting residents first.

“We want to focus less on events and go back to improving basic services to ensure that taxpayers’ basic needs are met.

“I want the Federal Territories, comprising Kuala Lumpur as the capital of Malaysia, Putrajaya as the administrative capital, and Labuan, to be safe places for people to live and work,” she said.

Yeoh envisions a Federal Territories that is “clean in form and substance”.

“This also comes in the form of clean governance,” she said when clocking in at her office at Menara Seri Wilayah, Precinct 2 in Putrajaya yesterday, accompanied by her deputy Tawau MP Datuk Lo Su Fui.

Also with her were Federal Territories Department director-general Datuk Seri Noridah Abdul Rahim, Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud and Perbadanan Putrajaya president Datuk Mohd Sakeri Abdul Kadir.

Addressing perceptions of being “unfriendly” toward developers, Yeoh clarified that her position was not against growth, but a firm stand against unsustainable development.

“Heavy rain and recent landslides have raised concerns among city residents, with property damage reminiscent of the major 2021 flood.

“When discussing development, it is crucial to engage the local representative and MP before approvals are granted, particularly if the proposed plans conflict with the gazetted local plan.

“These are some of the big issues we want to focus on,” said Yeoh who is Segambut MP.

She pledged to keep abreast of Kuala Lumpur issues by working closely with relevant agencies.

“One of the matters raised concerns Kampung Baru and issues related to local authorities.

“But I do not want to comment yet as I am waiting for updates to ensure there are in-depth discussions before we make any decisions,” she said.

Commenting on local government elections, Yeoh said she would discuss it with other governing parties of the unity government.
