A MAJOR redevelopment plan is in the pipeline for Dataran Petaling Jaya.

The facility in Section 52, Petaling Jaya in Selangor, will have a convention centre and digital library, as well as swimming and sports facilities.

Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the area, which was currently a field opposite Amcorp Mall, would be enhanced through redevelopment.

“We will have the largest auditorium in Petaling Jaya with a seating capacity of 5,000 people.

“We will also have a sports centre, business area and swimming facilities – not only for children and adults, but also a dedicated swim training centre.”

Mohamad Zahri, however, said the project developer would have to propose ideas on keeping the field intact.

“We will not forgo the field, and that is our requirement.

“These other developments can take place above or even beneath the field.

“The cost will be borne entirely by the private developer, and in return, we will allow the current Kompleks C at Jalan Sultan to be redeveloped into a condominium and retail space,” he said during the MBPJ full board meeting.

The parking bays removed from Kompleks C will be reinstated in Dataran Petaling Jaya’s new development, which will also have a sky park linking it to the Taman Jaya LRT station.

Several MBPJ councillors suggested the selection of the project developer be discussed at the MBPJ finance committee meeting.

Mohamad Zahri said the proposal would instead be referred to the state government for advice.

The project is estimated to begin mid-2026 and completed by the end of 2028.

In a separate matter, the full board meeting also discussed the RM150,000 allocation next year to implement the Barrier-Free City Programme.

Mohamad Zahri said the programme aimed to introduce universal design features at public places, buildings and amenities across Petaling Jaya to benefit senior citizens, children and persons with disabilities.

It will include accessibility audits at public buildings, city centre, walkways and public parks.

A total of 23 locations across the city would be upgraded with universal design features to ensure the facilities functioned effectively, the mayor added.

The programme would also provide accreditation to developers and private building owners who complied with universal design standards.

The initiative was part of MBPJ’s efforts to promote inclusivity for people with special needs, said Mohamad Zahri.
