Petaling Jaya organisation invites animal lovers to festive furkid meet-and-greet this weekend
UNABLE to adopt a dog but still want one to love and cherish?
Canine welfare organisation Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) has a solution through its MDDB Furkid Sponsorship Programme.
A monthly stipend grants visitation rights and access to the sponsored dog and, as a nod to Christmas, pet lovers are invited to a special meet-and-greet session this weekend in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
MDDB veterinary care coordinator Kavitah Ganasan said sponsorships were set at RM100 monthly for an able-bodied canine and RM150 for a disabled dog.
“The dogs can receive as many sponsorships as possible,” she said, adding that sponsors could visit their wards at MDDB’s SS3 event centre just by informing the organisation beforehand.
Kavitah said MDDB homed about 400 dogs, 70 of them disabled or with special needs.
Some of the disabled dogs, she said, were born crippled, maimed in accidents, paralysed, blind or were suffering debilitating conditions such as epilepsy.
“We have one dog born with half a brain and hence mentally challenged, and two mixed-breeds and a poodle diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD),” said Kavitah, adding that OCD dogs often attacked and chewed on their own limbs.
Animal lovers can meet prospective furkids at the event on Dec 20 and 21, from 11am to 8pm.
Kavitah said a Christmas tree had been put up with pictures of dogs in need of sponsorship, as ornaments.
“We will be bringing some dogs to the venue for potential sponsors to meet, and this includes Jarom our recent rescue,” said Kavitah.
Jarom was found unconscious, with three broken legs, on a busy road in Jenjarom, Telok Panglima Garang, and many well-wishers had paid for his surgery and cheered him on as he recovered from his ordeal.
To meet with the expenses, MDDB has also started a brand new and preloved clothes business which Kavitah said was hobbling along.
“We have received some branded clothes with the tags still on, and these are sold at only RM40 to RM50 each.
“We also have many cocktail dresses, as well as winter and autumn clothing priced at RM30 to RM40.”
Both the sale and sponsorship event is at No.17, Jalan SS3/46, Petaling Jaya.
