Potential best buds at MDDB’s adoption event on Sept 28.
CANINE welfare society Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) will be holding a first-ever pet adoption “speed-dating” event in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, at the end of this month.
It will be held in a home setting to allow adopters to spend more time at a slower pace with their potential pets to better gauge the animals’ characteristics.
“Since 2009, we have had adoption drives in malls and found that potential adopters were not able to evaluate the dogs’ characteristics,” said MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai.
She said this was because the canines had limited space to move around, while some were frightened by the loud noises, crowds and bright lights.
“We believe this is why mismatches happen, with some adopters returning the dogs and puppies after a short while.”
At the “speed-dating” jamboree, which MDDB plans to make a regular event, dogs and puppies are free to move around a big garden and people will be able to play with them to get to know their potential pets better.
There will also be a jumble sale, fundraising and sponsorship programme.
Lai said the public could sponsor any number of MDDB’s over 400 canine residents for a monthly contribution of RM100 for an able-bodied dog and RM150 for a disabled dog.
The event on Sept 28 will be held at No.17, Jalan SS3/46, from 11am to 6pm. For details, call 012-284 6039.
