Tunku Panglima Johor Tunku Abdul Rahman Al-Haj Ibni Sultan Ibrahim and Tunku Putera Johor Tunku Abu Bakar Al-Haj Ibni Sultan Ibrahim shared stories about physical and mental preparation as well as their challenges and memorable events in racing.

Tunku Abdul Rahman said he was inspired from a young age by the idea that motorsport could be an avenue for Malaysians to prove themselves on the world stage.

He said what began as a childhood fascination with cars grew into a passion for pushing limits and learning from setbacks to become better.

“Racing has always been about more than speed, it’s about discipline, focus and the pursuit of excellence.

“I got started by immersing myself in the fundamentals, understanding the machine, respecting the process and learning from mentors who believed in nurturing local talent.

“Every lap has been a lesson in perseverance and humility.

“What keeps me inspired today is knowing that our journey is not just personal, but part of a bigger story, showing young Malaysians that with courage, discipline and the right support, they too can chase their dreams and make their mark globally,” he said at Sembang Kereta 2025, a collaboration between KFC Malaysia and Johor Motorsports Racing (JMR).

Some 200 students from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI), TOC Automotive College and City University Malaysia attended the event at KFC Edusphere in Cyberjaya.

When asked their advice to Malaysians who want to follow in their footsteps, Tunku Abdul Rahman replied they must believe in themselves and that discipline is key.

“Whether you’re on the racetrack, in the classroom or building something new, discipline, humility and perseverance will take you far,” he said.

“Motorsport has taught me that success isn’t just about speed, it’s about focus, teamwork and the courage to keep going when things get tough.

“You must always be willing to learn, improve and respect the process.”

Tunku Abu Bakar said being backed by KFC showed that motorsport in Malaysia was rising.

“The partnership with KFC Malaysia has been transformative for the JMR team.

“It has opened doors to better visibility and stronger engagement with fans across the country.

“We’ve been able to share our journey more widely, connect with communities and build a deeper appreciation for Malaysian motorsport,” he said, adding that people see them as role models.

KFC operator, QSR Brands’s chief executive officer and managing director Nehchal Khanna said they were proud to celebrate the achievements of the Johor princes.

“Tunku Abdul Rahman concluded the  GT World Challenge Asia 2025 season as overall runner-up in the Pro-Am category, securing podium finishes with Johor Motorsports Racing’s Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R in the final round in Beijing.

“Tunku Abu Bakar also represented Johor Motorsports Racing in the 2025 season, competing alongside international drivers, Alex Sims and Jordan Love, in the team’s newly launched Corvette Z06 GT3.R.

“His participation underscores Malaysia’s commitment to standing shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best and his dedication inspires young Malaysians to dream bigger and aim higher,” he said.
