JOHOR plans to implement its community fitness programme in all 10 districts, says state youth, sports, entrepreneur development and cooperatives committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah (pic).
He said expanding Active Johor would be among his priorities after being entrusted to continue heading the portfolio, following his successful defence of his Larkin seat in the recent Johor state election.
The initiative, he said, was aimed at encouraging a healthier lifestyle while bringing families and communities together through recreational activities.
“We want Active Johor to reach all 10 districts,” he told the press after clocking in at Johor Sports Council (MSNJ) in Kota Iskandar.
Under the initiative, XTIF Johor Run 2026 was held at Puteri Harbour, attracting more than 3,000 participants. The 5km run was free to enter, with t-shirts, finisher’s medal and certificate given out.
On the sidelines were stalls and food trucks, and a Zumba session.
Mohd Hairi said future editions would feature activities such as fun runs, fitness sessions and family-oriented recreational events similar to Fit Malaysia.
Beyond community programmes, he said improving sports infrastructure across Johor would be a key focus.
He has instructed MSNJ to speed up upgrades involving stadiums, gyms, pickleball facilities and support infrastructure, while closely monitoring their implementation.
“Johor is also preparing to host football matches during the SEA Games in Malaysia next year.
“We are working closely with hotels, government agencies and other stakeholders to ensure athletes and visitors have a memorable experience.”
Mohd Hairi said focus was also being given to Johor’s preparation for the upcoming Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor with the state sending 686 athletes.
“We have set a top-three finish target and believe the contingent is capable of mounting a strong challenge after winning the overall title at the 2022 Sukma in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.
