MOTORISTS passing through the Persiaran Rimba Permai junction in Cyberjaya, Selangor, will soon see traffic lights installed in the area, with works to be completed in two months’ time.
In a statement, Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) said that a contractor was appointed on Nov 26, following complaints from local residents about road safety.
“The traffic lights will control traffic flow and reduce accidents at the location,” it said.
Other measures in place include building speed bumps and placing traffic marshals as well as closed-circuit TV (CCTV) cameras to capture traffic offences.
The road safety issue made headlines last month after residents complained about the lack of traffic lights at the junction.
They said the area had seen an influx of residents and vehicles due to new housing developments in recent years.
According to them, several accidents had occurred at the junction that mainly served those living at Masreca 19, Sejati Lakeside and Setia Safiro housing areas.
A few projects, including the construction of a school and new commercial area, are contributing to the traffic strain.
Sejati Lakeside resident K. Gunalan said they had previously highlighted the need for traffic lights to authorities.
“During peak hours, it takes us 15 to 20 minutes to reach the main road, which is actually less than five minutes away,” he said.
“With lorries and construction trailers going in and out, the junction has become even more dangerous.”
Gunalan said some motorists made sharp turns and used closed roads as shortcuts.
“They are trying to avoid congestion, but that actually increases the chances of accidents.”
MPSepang said a proposed roundabout at the site was delayed due to high costs and land constraints.
The council also urged motorists to abide by traffic rules while waiting for improvement works to be completed. — By FARID WAHAB
