Residents inspecting the bund along Sungai Buloh during the visit by MPKS and Selangor DID.
RESIDENTS of Taman Saujana Aman in Sungai Buloh are at their wits’ end over frequent flooding in their housing estate.
They want the authorities to identify short-term measures while expediting the flood mitigation project by the Federal Government in the area.
They raised their concerns to the officers from Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS) and Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) who went on a walkabout at the housing area.
The walkabout was organised by Jeram assemblyman Datuk Harrison Hassan.
Opened in 2017 with more than 300 double-storey houses, the area had experienced severe flooding in recent times, including in April and November this year, which saw some 700 residents evacuated during the latter incident.
Mohd Nurazamuddin Hamzah, 40, said the bund around the estate, which was built two years ago, was no longer sufficient to keep water from a nearby river from overflowing into their homes.
“Parts of the wall have also collapsed due to high water pressure,” he said, adding that the surrounding drains also needed upgrading.
Surterdi Tahir, 38, said he was worried about the safety of his disabled seven-year-old daughter each time it rains.
“We deal with flooding at least twice a year. My wife and I would panic when it rains for more than 30 minutes,” he said.
Father-of-two Shahrizam Radzi, 43, said the area saw waist-deep floodwaters after days of heavy rain last month.
“My family and I have stayed at the evacuation centres twice this year. We are not looking forward to more visits,” he said.
Hamidah Bahrom, 66, said her car was badly damaged after last month’s flood.
“I am old and frail. I just want a safe place to rest and retire.”
Harrison, who was briefed by MPKS and DID representatives, said works to upgrade the bund and repair drains were expected to start next month.
“I have asked them to widen and increase the height of the bund. The project will take about a month to complete.
“I will also meet with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof to discuss the flood mitigation project.
“The project began in 2023 but has been delayed several times,” said Harrison, adding that he had brought up the issue repeatedly at several Selangor State Assembly sittings.
