Dead tilapia in Puchong lake not linked to water quality

Poor water quality is not the reason for the deaths of tilapia at D’ Island Lake in Putra Perdana, Puchong.

Selangor public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) had launched an investigation after complaints were received on Dec 1.

"Large quantities of decomposing tilapia carcasses were found in the lake, causing a stink.

"However, sampling carried out at each of the lake’s inlets found that the water quality was good with a Dissolved Oxygen (DO) parameter of 15mg/L.

"This indicated that water quality was not the cause of the mass death,”said Jamaliah in a statement,

The dead tilapia were traced to a fish cage located in the lake but the identity of the owner could not be ascertained.

Jamaliah said that cleanup work by Luas was 40% completed and that the carcassses would be cleared by this weekend.

The dead fish will be disposed of at the Tanjung Dua Belas landfill in Kuala Langat, Selangor, she added.
