Anticipating this weekend’s king tide, the Selangor government has prepared to open temporary relief centres (PPS) to house evacuees in case of flooding, says Mohd Najwan Halimi.
The state disaster management committee chairman said authorities were on alert for any emergency, especially given the rainy weather conditions.
A king tide happens once or twice a year, causing tidal flooding along coastal areas.
“The weather this week has been much better than last week.
“However we should not take warnings from the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) lightly.
“The state is constantly monitoring the situation.
“In case of floods, all victims that register at the PPS will receive help,” he said at the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) Entrepreneur Mini Carnival 2025 at The Campus Ampang in Hulu Kelang yesterday.
The National Hydrographic Centre(PHN) of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) forecasted the king tide phenomenon from Dec 4 to 7.
On its website, it was stated that the phenomenon could cause seawater to overflow into inland areas and increase the risk of flooding in low-lying and coastal regions.
Flooding could be exacerbated as MetMalaysia has warned of thunderstorms in several areas during the period.
On the carnival, Mohd Najwan, who is also Selangor youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman, said it reflected the state’s continued commitment to empowering entrepreneurs and strengthening the local community in a holistic manner.
Among its key objectives, he said, were to provide promotional and marketing training for local entrepreneurs and supporting the adoption of digital technology through Platform Selangor (PLATS), promoting an inclusive and sustainable economy and positioning local entrepreneurs as the backbone of Selangor’s economy.
Mohd Najwan said about 100,000 entrepreneurs were registered under PLATS.
In a technology-driven world, he said, business digitalisation was no longer an option but a necessity.
“Through PLATS, the state government aims to develop a new generation of digital entrepreneurs capable not only of sustaining their presence in the local market but also of expanding into international markets.”
Also present at the event was MPAJ deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari.
Hazrolnizam said The Campus Ampang had been developed to promote a new shopping destination in Ampang Jaya, in line with the district’s shopping tourism initiative.
“The building features an ‘adaptive reuse architecture’ concept, as the site was previously a school and has now been repurposed and upgraded into a modern shopping complex while retaining elements of the original school structure and classrooms.
“It is hoped that developments of this kind will further enhance the tourism industry in Ampang Jaya,” he said.
During the event, MPAJ also presented several awards in recognition of outstanding business licence holders under its administration.
Among the awards given were the Clean Food Premises Award, Highest Plastic Bag Charge Collection Award, Trending Micro-Entrepreneur Award, Best Industry Management Award, and Best Night Market Management Award.
