RM76.6mil owed to Ipoh City Council in tax arrears

An estimated RM76.6mil is still owed to Ipoh City Council in assessment tax arrears, a sum unpaid by 91,257 property owners.

Ipoh mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah urged those who have yet to settle their arrears to do so quickly, as action would be taken against defaulters.

“We appreciate the cooperation of those who settle their arrears,” he said in his speech during the city council’s full board meeting.

He confirmed that notices had been issued to defaulters since Nov 15, including those who had failed to comply with previously agreed instalment plans.

“We encourage those who still have arrears to discuss with the city council about a suitable payment method.”

Zamakhshari added that such a proactive step could prevent confiscation of movable properties, which was currently being conducted.

To encourage city folk to make early payments for their 2026 assessment tax, he said the city council would continue with its lucky draw.

“Those who pay in full without arrears will be eligible for the lucky draw.

“Prizes worth up to RM100,000 will be available, including vehicles, household items, electronic and electrical appliances and 200 consolation prizes,” he said.

On the city council’s financial performance, Zamakhshari said about RM274mil in revenue had been recorded as of Nov 23.

He said about RM260mil or 98% of the amount was obtained from daily collections, arrears and receivables.

Regarding expenditure, he said the city council had spent about RM215mil or 81% of its budget.
