Two nabbed for allegedly stealing from Ipoh nasi lemak seller


IPOH: Two men have been arrested under suspicion of stealing a cash box and a mobile phone from a nasi lemak trader in Meru Raya here, a case that recently gained widespread attention on social media.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Muhammad Najib Hamzah said the suspects, aged 24 and 36, were detained in Teluk Intan on Monday (June 8) to assist in investigations into the incident, which took place on May 21.

He said the victim was operating her stall at 12pm when the suspects arrived on a motorcycle, purportedly to buy food.

“While the victim was busy packing nasi lemak orders, one of the suspects allegedly took a cash box containing cash and a mobile phone before fleeing the scene,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

He said further investigations found that both suspects had admitted to their involvement in the theft case, which is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

“Police also discovered that the pair were linked to several other criminal cases in the Ipoh district.

“Both suspects have been remanded until Friday to facilitate further investigations, and the case will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action,” he said.

ACP Muhammad Najib expressed appreciation to members of the public who had provided information and cooperated with investigators, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

He also advised the public to remain vigilant and ensure that their valuables are kept in a safe place to avoid falling victim to crime.
