THE Selangor government is prepared to channel and assess assistance to help Kampung Jawa residents in Klang to reduce their monthly rental costs under the Smart Rent Scheme (Skim Smart Sewa).
State housing and culture committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said 21 applications had been received for review to assist tenants who had applied as recently as Nov 26.
This includes the 19 residents who vacated their homes on Nov 24 to make way for the construction of Section 3 of the West Coast Expressway (WCE).
“There is a request and it was discussed during our last executive council meeting. We can provide temporary housing, but we want to ensure it goes to the correct people and is properly monitored,” Borhan said.
“This is what I discussed with Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari,” he said after launching the Majlis Pemberian Bantuan Projek Skim Ceria Tahun 2025 at a hotel in Shah Alam on Tuesday (Dec 2).
Borhan said the programme was designed to help residents displaced by development in the area.
“We will follow proper procedures. We might not request a deposit payment, but deduct from the rental itself,” he explained.
He added that there were suggestions to extend the scheme for up to a year to give families more time to find suitable housing.
“Our calculations showed that if the state supports these 21 families for a year, the total could reach up to RM200,000 if provided rent-free. This is something we are currently reviewing,” he said.
The locations identified for the Smart Rent homes are within 10km from Kampung Papan, with four possible sites offering good facilities, he added.
At present, 21 applications have been submitted but none of the families have moved in yet.
On compensation and rental rates, Borhan said these discussions were between the landowner and WCE.
“From what I was informed, they have followed proper procedures and provided what was required,” he said.
He explained that of the 1.9ha of land identified, 0.7ha would be used for an additional 110m stretch of the WCE.
The remaining 1.2ha would receive a new land title, with the possibility of being upgraded from agricultural to commercial status, subject to state approval.
