NGO launches campaign to stabilise Rembau stray population

ANIMAL welfare non-governmental organisation (NGO) NS Happy Paws has launched a campaign in Rembau, Negri Sembilan, to manage strays.

The #ProjekTogetherBoleh campaign, held in collaboration with Rembau District Council and Execute AWA, which fights for proper enforcement of Malaysia’s Animal Welfare Act, aims to build a science-based animal management model to manage the overpopulation of strays.

Its objectives are to stabilise the stray population humanely and responsibly, prevent the potential spread of zoonotic diseases such as rabies and elevate public consciousness on animal welfare ethics and responsible pet ownership.

NS Happy Paws president Jude Lazaroo said the NGO was the first to kick off this national prevention programme through its collaboration with the local authority, veterinary experts and civil society.

“This is the spirit that Execute AWA is committed to promoting – for greater animal welfare across the country, a mission that is in line with NS Happy Paws’ vision to always ensure all relevant parties move progressively and in synergy to replace outdated culling practices with greater compassion, science and structure,” he said.

He described it as a pioneer programme in modern animal identification and traceability, strengthening accountability and setting a new benchmark for sustainable urban animal coexistence.

After a health assessment, the strays will be neutered, vaccinated against rabies and microchipped before they are safely released in managed zones.

Microchipping will enable authorities to track the animals efficiently, supporting data-driven planning and improving public confidence in humane and systematic stray management.

Lazaroo urged the local community to play a role in this initiative by sharing verified information on stray clusters and refraining from obstructing or interfering with operational teams on site.
